Certain plasmids in Enterecoccus foecalis encode a mat{ng respense to recipient-preduced peptide sex pheromones. Targeted disruption of tra genes en pPDI suggested that TraA plays a central role in the plasmid-specifie ph romone signaling pathway. TraA functioned as a negatiye regulator for the pheromone-inducible conjuga} tr2Rsfer. Complementation analysis of pPDI tpa gene mutants by pADI suggested that the pheromone bindi"g function of TraC was non-specific betwee" these plasmids, but the function of TraA and the pheromone shutdown function oi' TraB are plasmid-specific.
